Housing Court Answers is seeking a Brooklyn Borough Coordinator.

Housing Court Answers seeks a full time coordinator for its Brooklyn Housing Court Information Table. HCA, an independent nonprofit, provides non-lawyer assistance to people in Housing Court without lawyers from Information Tables in all 5 boroughs.

The Job
Coordinators' responsibilities include running an information table in Housing Court that helps litigants by providing information about Housing and court procedures, assistance in completing forms, and referrals for legal assistance, rental arrears help, and social services or organizing. Coordinators are responsible for maintaining referral lists and ongoing contact with service providers. Coordinators also present workshops and trainings on Housing Court, organize advocacy around increasing access to justice in Housing Court, plan meetings of local advocates, annual meetings with key court staff, and carry out court monitoring activities.

Demonstrated ability to speak and write English and Spanish is necessary.
 
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Coordinate the provision of services at the information table in the Brooklyn Housing Court
  • Work with HCA staff and local advocates on advocacy campaigns to further the rights of unrepresented people in Housing Court
  • Develop workshops and trainings on Housing Court procedures and related housing issues for advocates and social service providers in Brooklyn
  • Design and develop information sheets and other tools for educating unrepresented litigants on their rights and on court procedures
  • Monitor the implementation in the Brooklyn Housing Court of the Right to Counsel law which provides for representation for low income tenants facing eviction
  • Monitor Brooklyn Housing Court judges and the operation of court functions in order to inform advocacy for unrepresented litigants
  • Maintain and regularly update the referral list of legal services and community based services
  • Liaise with community groups and social service providers
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice
  • Demonstrated ability to work with the public in a stressful and chaotic setting
  • Demonstrated knowledge of housing, tenants’ rights, and rent regulation
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English and Spanish
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively

  • Annual salary is $45,573
