About the Justice Committee: The Justice Committee (JC) is a grassroots organization dedicated to building a movement against police violence and systemic racism in NYC. We organize New Yorkers of color who are directly impacted by racist and abusive policing to lead campaigns that decrease police violence, increase police accountability and reduce the size, scope, and budget of the NYPD. For 40 years the JC has been supporting and organizing families who have lost loved ones to the NYPD. 

 

Job Summary: 

As some of those most directly impacted by the NYPD’s abusive policies and practices, families who’ve lost loved ones to the police have an essential role to play in leading New York City’s racial justice movement. The Families Organizing Coordinator will play a critical role in developing and uplifting this leadership and advancing families-led organizing priorities by working with families who have lost loved ones to the police and relevant staff and members to:

1. Develop, implement, and coordinate families-led grassroots organizing and policy campaigns.

2. Support relevant staff to develop, train, and deploy rapid response teams that respond to breaking incidents of police violence to canvas incident locations and connect with survivors and families of those killed by the NYPD.

3. Work with families and relevant staff to identify and implement healing justice programming for JC’s Families Organizing Program.

4. Create a brave space for survivors and families of victims that is rooted in individual and collective growth and models the world we are fighting to create.

The Families Organizing Coordinator will report to the Executive Director.

Responsibilities:

​

Coordinate Families-Led Grassroots Organizing and Policy Campaigns

• Facilitate families who’ve lost loved ones to the NYPD to identify shared systemic change demands and develop and implement grassroots organizing and policy campaigns to ensure they are met.

• Ensure previous campaign victories are being implemented as intended by the families.

• Strengthen current alliances and build new alliances that increase our power and advance our organizing goals.

• Work with relevant members to determine political education and leadership skills needed to advance organizing goals and campaigns and develop and implement programming based on this.

• Coordinate turn-out for meetings, actions and other activities.

• Represent JC in coalition spaces.

 

Healing Justice Programming

• Coordinate the families' annual/bi annual healing retreat.

• Work with families to identify and implement healing needs.

 

Rapid Response

• Work with relevant staff to develop, train, and deploy rapid response teams that respond to breaking incidents of police violence to canvas incident locations and connect with survivors and families of those killed by the NYPD.

 

Communications

• Work with members and relevant staff to coordinate communications strategies to advance families-led campaigns. This includes developing overarching strategies, drafting materials such as statements and talking points, conducting research, and developing and releasing digital communications content (e.g. website updates, eblasts, social media posts, graphics etc.).

• Help promote JC events, activities and campaigns.

 

Supervision

• Supervise interns, consultants and volunteers, as needed.

 

Other​

• Participate in organizational meetings and events, as required, including staff meetings.

• Represent the organization publicly, as approved or requested by your supervisor. This can include in the media, at meetings and events.

Required Skills and Experience:

• Demonstrated commitment to the mission, goals, and work of the Justice Committee.

• At least 4 years of community organizing, grassroots campaign development and implementation experience, particularly organizing low-income Black and Latinx communities.

• At least 4 years of experience base-building and developing leadership of members in organizing campaigns.

• At least 2 year of restorative justice experience.

• Organized, detail oriented, and demonstrated ability to manage multiple campaigns, with strong ability to prioritize areas of work.

• Ability to write and communicate clearly.

• Strong facilitation experience and skills preferred.

• Collaborative person who is also capable of working independently

• Ability to work evenings/weekends as necessary; and

 

Preferred Skills and Experience:

• Bilingual in English and Spanish

• 2 years of supervisory experience

• 3 years of experience organizing with survivors of violence or trauma.

• Knowledge of the landscape of the New York City anti-police violence movement

• Knowledge of the history and impact of police violence on Black, Latinx and other communities of color in NYC

 

Compensation and Schedule: This is a full-time salaried position with a generous benefits package that includes health, dental and retirement. Current annual salary range for this position is $65-80k based on experience and qualifications. Most work will be during business hours, but schedule varies based on activities of the project/campaign and will sometimes require working evenings and weekends.
