This interactive map illustrates the various factors that contribute to displacement across various neighborhoods

The Association for Neighborhood and Housing Development (ANHD) has been tracking New York City neighborhoods where the risk of displacement is growing at a rapid pace and presenting their findings via its Displacement Alarm Map (DAP map). The organization ranks the factors that are contributing to the loss of affordability in various neighborhoods and has decided to roll out a major update to the DAP Map that better visualizes their findings.

“Displacement is a complex problem; it looks different in Bushwick than it does in the South Bronx or Chinatown,” says ANHD. To highlight these various factors that contribute to displacement, the updated map looks at the loss of rent-regulated housing, property sales, evictions, and construction permits across 763,000 residential properties. There are color codes that illustrate the levels of risk that a particular neighborhood is facing due to a particular cause. For instance, in Canarsie, several areas have high levels of evictions, putting those neighborhoods at risk for displacement, while in Yorkville, many rent-stabilized units have been deregulated over the years, resulting in the loss of affordable homes.

The map also allows users to search their address to see in-depth information about the property from city agencies like construction permits, deregulation, and more. ANHD is hoping that the improved map will help tenants, advocates, and policy makers understand the various types of displacement happening in New York neighborhoods and the need for policy that better addresses these issues.
