The Time is Now: Real Solutions to End NYC’s Affordability Crisis

About

As New York City looks towards an unusually competitive mayoral election in November, ANHD’s platform The Time is Now: Real Solutions to End NYC’s Affordability Crisis lays out clear strategies to tackle the affordable housing crisis. This set of recommendations to our next city leaders has been developed with ANHD’s members across the city.

New York City’s low- and moderate-income residents and communities — and especially, Black, Indigenous, People of Color and immigrant communities — are at a breaking point. More than 300,000 New Yorkers don’t have homes, including 146,000 children. One third of all NYC renters pay more than half their income toward their rent, while half of the city’s households do not have enough money for housing, food, basic health care and to get around.

Why This Matters

For decades, a series of mayors have presented bold housing plans with big numbers, but failed to meaningfully improve the daily reality of the millions of New Yorkers struggling with sky-high rents, increasing evictions and homelessness, dangerous housing conditions, and an inaccessible homeownership market. Our city’s housing policies have failed to adequately address the needs of BIPOC, low-income, and marginalized communities, often reinforcing rather than resolving the impacts of long-standing structural oppression, discrimination, and disinvestment.

But we believe the affordability crisis can be solved. Experience has taught us that people show up to the polls when they feel their vote matters, and when they are voting on issues that impact their lives.

ANHD, our members, and our allies have a crucial role to play in listening, uplifting, and activating Black, Indigenous, People of Color and immigrant communities in this process.

What We’re Doing

ANHD believes in the power of organizing. We know that when people come together through community organizations, when community organizations unite across neighborhoods, and when we combine grassroots power with bold policy we can win meaningful, lasting change.

We are working with our members to educate and mobilize New Yorkers across the five boroughs around housing policy solutions that speak to their priorities, needs, and experiences. We hope the next mayor, and all of our elected representatives, will partner with us, our members, and the communities we serve to implement solutions to secure safe and affordable housing for all of us.
