We are excited to announce the 10 grantees selected for the 2022 New York Community Cares program! This grant program is funded by New York Community Bank (NYCB) and administered by ANHD. The program is designed to build the capacity of ANHD’s neighborhood-based member organizations to prevent displacement and preserve safe, stable, affordable housing. Through funding and ANHD trainings, the grant program this year focuses on organizations working with and empowering LMI and BIPOC communities - locally and within citywide and statewide coalitions - to prevent displacement and increase access to affordable housing, especially in response to new challenges that arose from the COVID-19 pandemic.
The 10 organizations selected for the 2022 grant program are working in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens. They are working in their neighborhoods to improve building conditions and prevent tenant eviction and displacement; to stop rezonings that will foster displacement and advance rezonings rooted in equity; to model and advance community ownership models; to strengthen and improve public housing, and more. They are amplifying these campaigns and other collective goals by working in citywide and statewide coalitions.

Background
The New York Community Cares grant program began in 2018 as part of a community-driven three-year CRA pledge NYCB developed with ANHD when they applied to combine two bank affiliates. In the pledge, the bank also adopted ANHD’s anti-displacement Multifamily Best Practices, created a new $2 million EQ2 program for CDFIs to make small business loans, and increased access to banking for immigrants by expanding the range of identifications the bank accepts.
When the RFP was announced, ANHD was working with our Equitable Reinvestment Coalition and the National Community Reinvestment Coalition to negotiate a new CRA plan as the bank grows through its pending application to acquire Flagstar Bank. That plan has since been finalized, and includes strong commitments to New York City across the full spectrum of CRA activities, including home and small business loans, responsible multifamily lending, bank branches and products, and quality community development loans, investments, and grants. We appreciate the bank for continuing this grant program for one more year while that new plan was being negotiated, and for committing to implementing pieces of the plan while the merger approval is still pending..
