April 20, 2016

Today, the City Council voted to rezone East New York and Cypress Hills, the culmination of a years-long process. As the first of 15 neighborhood rezonings anticipated under the de Blasio Administration, both the process and outcomes of the East New York rezoning provide lessons for residents and community organizations throughout the city.

Today, the City Council voted to rezone East New York and Cypress Hills, the culmination of a years-long process .

As the first of 15 neighborhood rezonings anticipated under the de Blasio Administration, both the process and outcomes of the East New York rezoning provide lessons for residents and community organizations throughout the city. Nearly a year ago, the neighborhood-based Coalition for Community Advancement: Progress for East New York Cypress Hills put forth its own detailed plan to meet local needs and priorities through the rezoning process. While some of the Coalition's proposals were ultimately incorporated, several aspects of the plan passed today fell short of the Coalition's goals - particularly regarding the creation of deeply affordable housing.

ANHD will continue to support the local Coalition's efforts as the East New York rezoning moves into the implementation phase, where accountability and tracking of the commitments made by various city agencies will be crucial.
