Smart City Investment and Local Service Provider Saves Industrial Jobs

With low barriers to entry and real career pathways, industrial and manufacturing jobs, whose average wages are twice that of the retail sector, are a crucial avenue of opportunity and equitable economic development for low-income communities. The Mayor and City Council announced their support of these kinds of quality jobs this past fall with the release of the new Industrial Plan.

The Mayor and City Council announced their support of these kinds of quality jobs this past fall with the release of the new Industrial Plan. This recent job preservation deal by the NYC Economic Development Corporation gives the company a sales tax waiver on new equipment and machinery purchases, thereby allowing the business to invest more into its future in New York City - illustrating the City's commitment to use more tools to nurture a crucial sector of the local economy. The deal also demonstrates the smart and effective work that can be done by local Industrial Business Service Providers (IBSPs). Having received baseline funding from the de Blasio Administration as a result of the City's industrial plan, IBSPs provide localized assistance to businesses that are looking for ways to grow, adapt, or navigate government. In the case of Transcontinental Inc, Business Outreach Center Network, a member of ANHD's Industrial and Manufacturing working group, provided communications and advocacy support at the city and state level as the company weighed its options. With $1.5 million in newly baselined funding for program, more businesses across the 21 Industrial Business Zones will benefit from the same kinds of localized services that can keep good paying jobs here for New York City workers.

ANHD applauds the Administration's focus on this issue and looks forward to seeing ongoing support for and partnership with the IBSPs and city industrial stakeholders in the months to come, so that we continue to protect and grow jobs in our city.
