Employment growth throughout the City is an important step to ensuring economically strong communities. Under this Administration, outer borough private sector jobs grew by 6.4% in the past 18 months, easily surpassing the 4.7% increase seen between 2011 and 2013. Sectors that saw the most growth include health care, tech, food service, and hospitality. The city has heavily invested in each of these industries, either financially or programmatically. Each of these sectors is a welcome addition to the New York City economy and needed diversification from our past reliance on the finance, insurance, and real estate sectors. While the numbers reported by EDC are encouraging, much still needs to be done to ensure that jobs go to the neighborhoods and residents who need them the most.

These statistics do not reflect where in the outer boroughs job growth is concentrated. Job growth and loss is reported at the countywide level. But Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Staten Island are home to diverse neighborhoods with different needs. The numbers don't capture if job growth is concentrated in high-income outer borough neighborhoods like Downtown Brooklyn and Long Island City, or if job growth is reaching lower-income neighborhoods like Brownsville, Jamaica, and Hunts Point.

Employment opportunities must reach communities and neighborhoods that have struggled with longstanding underemployment and unemployment. And the successes of occupational growth alone must be evaluated against these jobs' wages, benefits, hours, and permanency - all of which contribute to job quality. The de Blasio Administration investment and support of outer borough job growth is a key step forward. Through our Equitable Economic Development work, ANHD and our groups hope to work with this Administration to ensure that low and moderate income populations and neighborhoods have access to future employment opportunities.
