ANHD Statement on Mayor Adams’ Austerity Budget

June 30, 2023

Ultimately, Mayor Adams’ austerity budget means low-income, BIPOC, and immigrant New Yorkers will continue to bear the brunt of our inequitable and unsustainable housing, land use, and economic development policies.

This week, 100,000 people slept in shelters in New York City. This week the Mayor and City Council also concluded negotiations on an austerity budget for FY24 that will all but ensure that our city’s homelessness and affordability crisis continues unabated. One bright spot in the budget is the allocation of increased capital funding for affordable housing - including NYCHA. Unfortunately, the impact of those resources will be limited due to further operating budget cuts at HPD and other agencies. Meanwhile, while we commend the City Council for funding community organizing programs like Community Housing Preservation Strategies and increasing baselined funding for Right to Counsel, the need far outweighs the resources allocated - meaning we will continue to see tenants evicted due to lack of legal representation. Ultimately, Mayor Adams’ austerity budget means low-income, BIPOC, and immigrant New Yorkers will continue to bear the brunt of our inequitable and unsustainable housing, land use, and economic development policies.
