Overview

United for Small Business NYC (USBNYC) is a coalition of community organizations across New York City fighting to protect New York’s small businesses and non-residential tenants from the threat of displacement, with a particular focus on owner-operated, low-income, minority-run businesses that serve low-income and minority communities.

The Project

The rising cost of commercial rents leads to displacement that affects both long-term and newer small businesses across New York. Displacement disproportionately affects owner-operated, low-income, minority-run businesses that serve low-income communities and communities of color.

Small business displacement is cultural displacement, and our coalition of tenant’s groups, artists, and nonprofit developers fights to create protections and resources for small businesses so that they can be valued and thrive. In the long term, we aim to change the current power imbalance between commercial landlords and their tenants.
