ANHD's 50th Anniversary year has been a time to reflect on what we have achieved across 5 boroughs in 5 decades. It has also been a moment to re-convene and celebrate with legacy builders and new champions fighting to win affordable housing and thriving, equitable neighborhoods for all New Yorkers. Learn more about who we are, and how we celebrated 50 years of Building Commnity Power in New York City below!

Expanding Equity | May 28, 2024 | Trinity Commons
No housing is affordable or secure without a good job and access to economic opportunities.
Yet, as New York City develops and grows, our longstanding barriers and inequalities to homes, jobs, and small businesses for our low- and moderate-income New Yorkers, people of color, immigrants, and other marginalized populations persist. We have an opportunity to bridge the longstanding equity gaps we see in our neighborhoods and communities.
During our in-community conversation on Expanding Equity, we heard from Janis Bowdler, Counselor for Racial Equity, who discussed how the US Treasury is rethinking and introducing programs and policies that advance economic equity for communities of color and address the disparities in wealth and financial security.
The program was followed by a panel discussion with Anisha Steephen, Senior Advisor, U.S. Treasury, Sarah Salem, Director of Community Engagement for the Thriving Communities Technical Assistance, WE ACT for Environmental Justice, and Elizabeth Zeldin, Director, Enterprise Community Partners, Inc., moderated by Barika X. Williams, Executive Director, ANHD.
This summer, we immersed ourselves in the rich stories of New York City’s community development movement. In celebration of our 50th anniversary, ANHD conducted dozens of interviews to reflect on our journey and shape our future. During this event, we shared these stories, listened to live oral histories from movement leaders, and celebrated our collective history.

ANHD's 50th anniversary celebration was another opportunity to support and invest in small businesses. We are proud to say that 90% of our expenses for this event went toward minority, women-owned business enterprises.
