Grassroots groups to the rescue

August 2, 2012

They’ve leveraged $1.3 billion for affordable housing, rescued 7,400 apartments, created over 9,000 new units and passed a major bill through City Council As community organizations receive marching orders to merge and/or grow into multi-purpose, mega-operations, ANHD ‘s report.  From Collaboration to Transformation, shows just how powerful smaller grassroots groups can be.  By retaining their independence and modest scales, 15 groups working together with ANHD remain approachable to local residents, have accurate on-the-ground insight into local treacherous landlord tactics, and possess the concern and flexibility to go after and achieve repeated successes, including  - in tandem with other ANHD groups - developing the nation’s strongest Responsible Banking Act passed by City Council in May 2012. From 2003 to 2012, the 15 groups have met with ANHD, picked their battles, learned strategies and returned to their small community offices to implement their plans.  When ANHD tallied their successes racked up in just nine years, from 2003 to 2012, it discovered over $1.3 billion leveraged for affordable housing,  and over 30,000 affordable apartments and 259 additional buildings rescued or built for low-income New Yorkers. Please see From Collaboration to Transformation to see more reasons why ANHD still believes in the grassroots. The 15 organizations that are protecting residents in our city’s low-income communities are:  Asian Americans for Equality, Brooklyn Congregations United, Centro Hispano "Cuzcatlan", Chhaya Community Development Corporation, Cypress Hills LDC, Fifth Avenue Committee, Good Old Lower East Side, Housing Conservation Coordinators, Inc., Make the Road New York, Mirabal Sisters Cultural and Community Center, New Settlement Apartments, Northwest Bronx Community & Clergy Coalition, Pratt Area Community Council (PACC), Queens Congregations United for Action, and  St. Nicks Alliance, coordinated by the Association for Neighborhood and Housing Development.
